Geometry & Topology Seminar: "The Search for Multisymplectic Geometry"
Ari Stern
Abstract: Symplectic geometry emerged from the study of Hamiltonian ODEs arising in physics. "Multisymplectic geometry" has been used to describe the generalization(s) of this theory to PDEs -- but several decades into this program, there still isn't a consensus on the correct formalism. I will discuss some old and new approaches to this problem, along with some results on structure-preserving numerical methods for multisymplectic PDEs.
