Speaker: Francesca Henderson, University of Maryland, College Park

Abstract: Within our country, political climate, and education system, mathematics holds significant power. For example, politicians use statistics to influence voters, and mathematics high stakes test scores are used to determine college entry. To attend to these issues, many people turn to Social Justice Mathematics (SJM). SJM is a growing area in the field of math with educators engaging in content and teaching practices from kindergarten to postsecondary institutions. Researchers, practitioners, and policymakers are paying more and more attention to the affordances of teaching math through this lens as an effort to be anti-racist, culturally responsive, provide greater access to the field of mathematics. In this talk, I will provide a context for describing social justice mathematics, provide examples in different contexts, and provide resources for future teachers and researchers.
