Graduate Colloquium: "Tableaux, Springer fibers, and Symmetric Group Representations"
Speaker: Martha Precup, Washington University in Saint Louis
Abstract: Representations of the symmetric group arise naturally in many different areas of mathematics and play a particularly important role in algebraic combinatorics. Each irreducible representation of the symmetric group can be constructed on the cohomology of a certain algebraic variety known as a Springer fiber. In this talk, we introduce Springer fibers and discuss how their geometric structure can be studied using combinatorial tools. I’ll give a survey of some known results and topics of current research.
