Graduate Colloquium: "An introduction to the Atiyah-Singer index theory"

Speaker: Yanli Song, Washington University in Saint Louis

Abstract: The Atiyah–Singer index theorem states that for an elliptic differential operator on a compact manifold, the analytical index (related to the dimension of the space of solutions) is equal to the topological index(defined in terms of some topological data. This theory related many different branches of math such as differential geometry, functional analysis, topology and theoretic physics etc. I will give an introductory talk about this theory without assuming any prerequisite, and discuss some application to other subjects.
