Geometry & Topology Seminar: Weightings and singular Lie filtrations

Speaker: Yiannis Loizides, George Mason University

Abstract: A weighting of a manifold along a submanifold is a type of filtration of the vanishing ideal of the submanifold. These arise naturally in geometric situations where one needs to assign weights to different normal directions to the submanifold. An example of such a situation occurs given a Lie filtration of the tangent bundle of a manifold. I will describe some general features of weightings, weighted deformation spaces, weighted Lie groupoids, and related constructions. The talk is based in part on joint work with Eckhard Meinrenken and discussions with Dan Hudson.
