Geometry and Topology Seminar: "Actions of certain solvable groups on hyperbolic metric spaces"

Abstract: Hyperbolic metric spaces generalize the geometry of classical hyperbolic spaces and trees. In this talk we will classify the actions of certain families of solvable groups on hyperbolic metric spaces up to a natural equivalence relation. For these families, every action is equivalent to the action on a tree or on the hyperbolic plane. The proofs involve the algebra of the n-adic integers, among other tools. This is joint work with Carolyn Abbott.
