Gauge Theory Seminar: "Property P for knots and Instantons II"

Abstract: After reviewing the properties of Donaldson invariants from last time, I discuss a non-vanishing theorem for the Donaldson invariants of certain family of smooth 4-manifolds. Then we use his non-vanishing theorem and taut foliations on 3-manifolds to give the proof of Property P for knots: any 3-manifold obtained as surgery on a non-trivial knot is not homeomorphic to a homotopy sphere.
