Colloquium: Limits, linkage, and applications

Speaker: Jenna Rajchgot, McMaster University

Abstract: Sometimes, one can answer algebro-geometric questions about a complicated algebraic variety by studying a related but simpler algebraic variety instead. I'll discuss two established techniques for simplifying: taking certain limits and constructing certain "links".  I'll then show that these two seemingly different processes are closely related. Finally, I'll discuss some applications, especially to the study of various combinatorial classes of polynomial ideals (monomial ideals, toric ideals, generalized determinantal ideals).

This talk will include joint works with Mike Cummings, Sergio Da Silva, Sara Faridi, Patricia Klein, Thai Nguyen, Alexandra Seceleanu, and Adam Van Tuyl.

Host: Laura Escobar Vega
