Association for Women in Math: "Symmetry and simulation: the surprising mathematical depth of numerical ODEs"

Speaker: Ari Stern, Washington University in Saint Louis

Abstract: Most ordinary differential equations are too complex to solve exactly, so numerical algorithms must be used to simulate approximate solutions. This is a classical area of applied mathematics, but recent work has revealed surprising connections with diverse branches of pure mathematics, including geometry, algebra, and even combinatorics. This talk will introduce the classical problem, discuss the modern perspective, and present some recent results.
