Affine Pavings

Martha Precup, Washington University in Saint Louis

Abstract: An affine paving is a decomposition of a variety into finitely many pieces isomorphic to affine space.  In this talk, I will outline a method for obtaining an affine paving of certain subvarieties of the flag variety.  This construction extends results of De Concini, Lusztig, and Procesi.  We will also discuss the combinatorial applications of such a paving, with an emphasis on a few important examples.
