3rd Year Candidacy Requirement: Understanding Branched Covers of 3 Manifolds Over Knots

Speaker: Akshata Pisharody, Washington University in St. Louis

Abstract: This talk will discuss ways to manipulate and understand 3-manifolds using branched covers and explore a fundamental theorem that allows the construction of any 3 manifold as a branched cover over a knot. Motivated by the L-Space conjecture, the tools presented in this talk can help understand or potentially inspire future constructions of co-oriented taut foliations.
