"3-Manifold Deep Cuts"

Speaker: Jeff Norton, Washington University in Saint Louis

Abstract: A barrier to discussing, with non-experts, the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds is a lack of good pictures. We will remove this barrier. The class of 3-manifolds we can theoretically draw well includes those that are compact and embeddable in 3-space, and arguably not much else. We will discuss ways of cutting up 3-manifolds so that the pieces can be drawn well, and what sorts of geometric and topological information one can gain from various sorts of cuttings.
