Szego Seminar: "Hessenberg Varieties"

Speaker: Ben Castor, Washington University in Saint Louis

Abstract: A Hessenberg variety is an algebraic subset of a projective variety called a flag variety. To simplify our understanding, we may associate the flag variety with a quotient group of the group of invertible matrices. This reduces understanding a variety to an understanding of linear algebra. The restriction to such objects gives us a family of varieties on which computations can be done directly. Furthermore, if we take a subset of regular nilpotent matrices, the variety decomposes into even nicer subvarieties.
