Colloquium: "Mirroring Towers: Fibration and Degeneration in Calabi-Yau Geometry"

Speaker: Charles Doran, University of Alberta

Abstract: Calabi-Yau manifolds play a central role in algebraic geometry. We will briefly survey known constructions, working our way up in dimension, and focus on the geometric implications of nesting one Calabi-Yau manifold in another. Mirror symmetry — a phenomenon first suggested by physicists — links (families of) Calabi-Yau manifolds. Mirroring towers of Calabi-Yau manifolds leads us to propose a new conjecture that unifies mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds and their Fano manifold cousins.
