Colloquium: "The Illinois Geometry Lab"

Speaker: Jeremy Tyson, University of Illinois

Abstract: The Illinois Geometry Lab (IGL) was founded in 2011 to promote undergraduate research and community outreach in our department. From modest origins, the IGL has grown substantially. Spring 2019 witnesses 25 IGL-sponsored research projects involving over 90 undergraduates and 20 graduate students, ranging across most areas of pure and applied math. The IGL has also quickly become our department's premier organization focused on engagement with and outreach to the local community. I will discuss the IGL's history and structure, and reflect on the challenges and rewards of administering a large-scale undergraduate research enterprise within a research-oriented public mathematics department.
