Algebraic Geometry Seminar: "Newton-Okounkov bodies of arrangement varieties"

Speaker: Joseph Cummings, University of Kentucky

Abstract: Arrangement varieties are natural generalizations of toric varieties. In general, an arrangement variety X is a variety with an effective action by a torus T where the Chow quotient X / T is a projective space. In this talk, we will show how one can find many degenerations of an arrangement variety X to a toric variety using tropical geometry. Using techniques developed by Kaveh and Manon, we can give concrete descriptions of the corresponding Newton-Okounkov bodies of these degenerations.
