Roever Lecture: "Applications of gauge theory to 3-dimensional topology and maybe to combinatorics"
Tom Mrowka, Professor of Mathematics, MIT
Abstract: This talk will be a (hopefully) gentle introduction to applications of gauge theory to some questions in low dimensional topology. I will focus on some methods with origins in the mathematics behind gauge theory for detecting the unknot and hint at how extensions of these might give a route to a new proof of the four-color map theorem.
