Math 127, Remarks, September 14, ‘09

Our Progress: So far we have covered Chapter 6 and we are now beginning Chapter 7.

Problems in the Book: The book has a number of examples worked in detail. It also has homework type problems at the end of each section and more at the end of each chapter. We are not using those problems for homework but they do give a good view of what you should be able to do. The answers to ALL of these problems are in the back of the book. For the problems marked with SM there is more detail on the solution in the Student Manual for the course; a link to which is on the course’s web page. Also on the web page is a link to a web site which accompanies our text. That site has a set of “test your knowledge” questions for each chapter.

The First Exam: Our first exam is in the evening of Wednesday, September 23, a week from this coming Wednesday. The room and seating assignments will be available online that day; there is a link for that on our web page.

You may bring a calculator to the exam (non-graphing, non-programmable) and a 3” X 5” index cards with hand written notes (you may use both sides).

The exam will consist of twenty multiple choice questions. It will cover the material in Chapter 6 as well as sections 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3. The topic coverage in the WebWork assignments and the quizzes lags behind the schedule of topics covered in lecture so don’t let those two be your main guide as to what you should know for the exam.

Exams for this course from earlier semesters are available online (again, a link is on our web page.)  In some of those semesters other instructors taught the course, in all of those semesters another text was used.  Hence there will only be a limited match between the questions on our exam and the type of questions that showed up on those exams.

The First Quiz: Most weeks there will be a quiz at the beginning of the discussion section. Generally the quiz will be on topics from the previous week’s lectures. The first quiz is Thursday of this week. It will cover the material in Sections 6.7 through 6.11.
