Department of Mathematics, WUSTL - Library
Washington University in St. Louis, Cupples I Hall, One Brookings Drive, St. Louis MO. 63130
The Mathematics Library located in Cupples 1, ground floor, room 16 will be closing on August 7, 2009. The Mathematics Collection will be moved on August 14 to Level B and staging areas on Level 1 of the Olin Library, Danforth campus, WUSTL.
Relocation schedule:
August 6: current unbound journals move to Olin Library Level 1 Periodical area.
August 7, 5 pm: Math Library closes permanently.
August 12-14: books and journals are moved to Olin Library (Level B and staging areas on Level 1).
August 10-17: throughout this period, math librarian Ruth Lewis will move to Olin Library room 139. Her phone number 935-4819 and email address rlewis@wustl.edu will remain the same.
August 17-25: math materials are available in Olin Library but there may be a transition period as interfiling with the Olin Library collection happens; in addition to interfiling book call numbers, journal volumes will need to be interfiled by call number since they were previously filed alphabetically.
Tips for dealing with the transition:
1. Try not to plan work with paper math library books and journals August 10-14; contact math librarian Ruth Lewis if you do need something during that period.
2. Get your fall 2009 reserve lists in as early as possible; in addition to a little inevitable confusion in the stacks, there will be a new Reserves system for everyone this fall.
3. Check the online catalog and remember to jot down the call number (even for a journal) and level (A,B, 1, 2 or 3) before you come over to Olin Library.
4. Keep Ruth informed about your library needs. Sometimes face-to-face conversation is more efficient or more fun. Just ask at the front help desk at Olin. Folks there will be happy to help you find Ruth the first time. She will be in Olin room 139.
Note: We currently plan to leave the math textbook collection and math dissertations in the math library space for use within the math department.
You may view the Mathematics Collection virtually or in-person. Anyone with a valid WUSTL ID may borrow books.
Many Olin Library services are available through the web. The
General Information Page for the Mathematics Collection includes:
- current hours,
- links to the catalog and catalog services (such as book requests/renewal, MOBIUS
request),
- online databases,
- online services (such as interlibrary loan and Ask US!).
From the page, look for and click the Math Library link for details.
The Mathematics Collection consists of research books and journals. Information on materials of more general interest such as:
- a "Textbook" collection with a variety of recent texts used in our
courses,
- lighter materials on mathematics,
- our "Problem-Solving" collection containing books that many have found helpful,
- video presentations by outstanding mathematicians,
can also be found on the General Information Page.
The Math Research Guide is designed to assist your research.
News about the Mathematics Collection is distributed at
Math Library News. Please visit this
site regularly or add the site's RSS feed to your e-mail or RSS reader.
Our mathematics librarian is eager to help and hear from math department
students and researchers. E-mail questions, suggestions, and requests for appointment to
discuss library issues to Ruth Lewis.
