ATTENTION: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this workshop will not take place as originally planned. More details will be posted here as soon as they are confirmed.

Workshop Description

Open Problems in Parametric Likelihood-Based Inference is a workshop with a unique format intended to make progress on a set of goals related to research in frequentist and neo-Fisherian parametric likelihood-based inference. Likelihood asymptotics and higher-order asymptotics, as well as Fisherian conditional inference, will be major themes of the workshop. While we will be very interested in modern inference problems, current applications, and computational issues, it is expected that a substantial portion of the workshop will also focus on classical open problems in likelihood inference. That is, we will discuss the sort of problems that puzzled R.A. Fisher and his contemporaries, and also the problems not fully resolved by the surge in likelihood inference research activities during the 1980s and 1990s. Some goals of the workshop include:
Format
The workshop is a full 4 days. This workshop will not have standard talks in which speakers present their latest paper. Rather, all speakers are required to commit to speaking about the history and current state of progress on one or more open problems which are not necessarily related to his/her own work. These problems should be discussed beforehand with their collaborators and other researchers who are geographically close to the speaker, and the talk should be representative of the opinions of that group. Since the researchers in the fields of greatest relevance for this workshop are so geographically dispersed, the hope is that representatives from each of the major parametric likelihood research centers will take part. The workshop will have blocks of time reserved for floor discussion, small group discussions, and plenty of breaks to catch up with old likelihood friends or make new ones.

Participation
There are a number of ways to participate, even if you are not a speaker, and even if you cannot be physically present.
Given the nature of this workshop, participation is not completely open, in the sense that everyone is expected to contribute and therefore is required to have relevant expertise. However, it is certainly not restricted to invitation-only. It is nearly impossible to be aware of all of the researchers whose work is most relevant for the purpose of this workshop. Anyone who is interested but has not been contacted about it should contact me directly.

In order for this workshop to successfully achieve its goals, and to promote research in this field to the benefit of everyone, participants must pledge to temporarily abandon their competitive urges, and not use the discussions and documents pertaining to the workshop to benefit their own research agendas before the workshop takes place. It is best if participants agree not to work on these open problems before the workshop. The workshop will be most impactful, and future developments in this area will have the best chance of success, if the whole community has already produced an authoritative document detailing which problems are important and why, and summarizing the historical progress in that subject area to provide context. Moreover, my primary motivations for this workshop are to bring these geographically-dispersed communities back together, to encourage collaborations, and to strengthen the field as a whole.

More specific details will soon be posted below. Logistical information, such as registration, travel, lodging, will be updated at the bottom of the page closer to the workshop date. Contact: Todd Kuffner, email: kuffner is the first part, and I'm at wustl.edu

This conference supports the Welcoming Environment Statement of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).

Examples of potential topics

To get some idea of the types of topics that will be emphasized at this workshop series, it is perhaps most helpful to mention the research monographs, alphabetically by first author, which are most relevant for this workshop. The * symbol denotes what I consider to be the most relevant of all.

Topics might include open problems related to, for example:

As mentioned in the Workshop Description, a key focus here will be on classical open problems, though we will also be interested in

Researchers (current and former) in Parametric Likelihood Inference Around the World
** This list is incomplete, and will be updated when I have time. The list focuses particularly on likelihood asymptotics and neo-Fisherian inference, and includes many people who have not worked in these areas for many years, but did make very important contributions in the past. I hope to bring some of them back home.

Registration Details
Registration will open in March, and will close approximately 3 weeks before the workshop, or when the room capacity is reached (~50 people). There will be a registration fee, which is expected to be between $320-$350, and will include all breakfasts, lunches, coffee breaks, and parking.

Dates, Times, and Location

The workshop is a full 4 days. The festivities will begin around 9:00am on Thursday June 25th, and will end by 5:30pm on Sunday June 28th. The workshop will take place at a conference center on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

Lodging Information

(a)
The Knight Center is holding a block of rooms until June 1st, at a special rate ($139/night).  All of these rooms have one queen bed. Everyone seemed to like staying here in the past; it's quite convenient and comfortable. To book one of these rooms, information about the `block code' will be provided when you register for the conference.

(b) Other nearby hotels include: (1) The Moonrise Hotel, which is within walking distance. (2) Clayton Plaza Hotel, which offers a free shuttle service.
